How and why should I gain muscle?

Muscle is an amazing tissue in the body. It's the part of our body that gives us the control we want and need in life. The mind is often a useless thing if it has no muscle to put thought into action. It is also an important part of our body's defense mechanism. It protects things structurally (joints, bones, etc.), metabolically and physically, whether by means of escape or defense against the dangers, human or not, that we encounter.

Muscle is an amazing tissue in the body. It's the very part of our body that gives us the control we want and need in life. The mind is often a useless thing if it has no muscle to put thought into action. It is also an important part of our body's defense mechanism. It protects things structurally (joints, bones, etc.), metabolically and physically, whether by means of escape or defense against the dangers, human or otherwise, that we encounter. I want to talk more specifically about these things that I mentioned in order to help you understand that it is good to gain muscle.

Protection is the first area to mention when discussing why you should gain muscle and this is true in many ways. Muscles are the main protectors of the joints and bones in our body. The strong muscles that span the joints serve as a counterweight to the forces that would otherwise separate and render those joints useless. The same goes for the muscles that support long bones. If we didn't have muscles capable of absorbing the impact of the forces we experience every day, we would still face fractures and immobility. In fact, activities that promote muscle building are the same as those that increase bone mineral density, which is especially important for women later in life, after menopause. Muscles also help us maintain our balance, which protects us from falls. Muscle tissue also plays an important role in regulating blood pressure and therefore indirectly protects many major organs, including the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes.

Metabolically, muscle is very important for maintaining a healthy weight and absorbing the damaging effects of the typical American diet. This doesn't mean that if you exercise and gain muscle, you are automatically a healthy weight and can eat whatever you want. But it means that people who spend a lot of time each week doing strength training exercises are less prone to problems like diabetes, hypertension, cancer, heart disease and atherosclerosis - all problems linked to Obesity - because muscles are a very good metabolizer of the extra fuel (glucose and fat) that we consume every day as part of the typical "unhealthy diet".

Finally, for this article, I want to talk to you about the importance of doing things that only strong muscles will allow you to do. I'm talking specifically about your mental health here. Basically, if you're not strong, you're probably not active (they go hand in hand) and if you're not active, you're so much more prone to things like inactivity and depression, this is not funny. So take my advice and start lifting weights to gain muscle which is one of the most valuable assets you have on your body.
